Looking good for 2013!

Well, as if 2012 wasn't a fab year for sport, 2013 looks like it will at least start off by continuing the trend.  Coming up are:
* British Junior Squash Open, Sheffield, 2nd-6th January
* Northern Athletics Championships, Sheffield, 12th-13th January
* Fencing - Beazley Trophy & FIE Centennial Activity, Guildford, 25th-27th January
* UK Indoor Athletics Championships, Sheffield, 9th-10th February
* British Athletics Grand Prix, Birmingham, 16th February

then there will be Snooker in April/May, Swimming and Diving in June/July, the list goes on....I've put the book project on a slight hold over Christmas, but will look to get a near-enough 'final' draft ready by the end of February (which will allow for pictures for some of the above to be included).

Hope your year is a good one in 2013 =:~)

BBC Sports Personality 2012

Well, it seems like a fantastic year of sport was capped off last night by Bradley Wiggens being awarded the BBC Sports Personality of the year.
I don't know how 2013 will ever match it for such full-on goodness, though it is shaping up nicely and there is the rather juicy prospect of Le Tour coming to Yorkshire in 2014.....

Roll up, roll up

I will be at a couple of local Xmas Fairs: High Storrs School on Sat 1st Dec and King Edwards on Sun 9th December with canvases and prints for sale - ideal Xmas gifts at very reasonable prices, honest!

Flog It!

The popular BBC2 programme Flog It! has been filimng today at the Cutlers Hall in Sheffield.  Popped along during my lunchtime to take a few pictures of Paul Martin, James Lewis and Anita Manning.  Pictures to follow.

Writing a new book

Everyone it seems is doing it - Jessica Ennis, J.K.Rowling etc etc, getting their latest and greatest down in paper form and out in time for the Christmas rush.

Not wanting to join them in that respect, but inspired to publish some pictures post the joy-filled summer that was the Olympics and Paralympics, I'm currently planning a PDF release of some photos and accompanying text on Sports Photography, probably out early 2013 and on sale for charity.

One of the Chapters is definitely going to be titled: "How much the average Sports Agent cares about Photographer's Copyright".  Currently that chapter is looking very blank.

*** UPDATE *** (not quite a Stop Press....).  As well as the PDF version which will be on sale on my website when ready, I hope to publish as an iBook.  Unfortunately the iBook will not be for charity as the pricing structure means that a large chunk of the money goes to support the financially-strapped Apple Corporation =:~)

Local Artist Tim Hulley

I have taken some photographs of canvases by local artist Tim Hulley for his publicity.  They are on sale at Whirlow Farm in Sheffield (web link: Whirlow Farm).  They are pictures of the animals and landscapes of the Peak District.

Move over J K Rowling

Ok, so the content is different and I don't write about wizards (though as I get older and grumpier the wish to have a wand that would respond to "Expelliarmus" etc is very tempting).

No, the publishing world has decided to act like buses recently and make a splurge on my photos in: the Rotherham Advertiser; Dinnington Guardian; Barnsley Chronicle; Sheffield Telegraph and (best of all) UK Tennis magazine.

At least she'll have an ice-breaker now in case we start mingling in the same circles......

Tour of Britain 2012

The Tour of Britain is the UK's biggest professional bicycle race and a centrepiece of the British sporting calendar as the country’s largest free-to-watch live sporting event, with many hundreds of thousands more following via television and online.
Lucky enough to be able to take a day off work yesterday and head off to deepest Derbyshire and catch the riders for 10 seconds as they slow down to take a sharp left-hand turn over some loose gravel.  Centre frame is Bradley Wiggins, British winner of the Tour de France 2012.

Welcome to the OFFICIAL Jessica Ennis Facebook Page

One of my photos from last Friday's welcome home civic reception for Jessica Ennis in Barker's Pool, Sheffield has made it onto the OFFICIAL Jessica Ennis Facebook page (892,367 likes · 358,648 talking about this).

The wonderful Pete McKee

Pete starys off one of his blog entries with: "Living in Sheffield affords me some luxuries like having the odd pint with Richard Hawley and being able to put Henderson’s Relish on my Meat and Potato pie..."
It also allows him to meet the lovely Jessica Ennis and pass on some of his iconic paintings to her.  One of these occasions was last Friday at a Civic Reception for Jess at the City Hall, Sheffield:
Jess had just enjoyed the applause from a crowd of 10,000+ in Barker's Pool.  The ballroom in the City Hall was a relative oasis of calm, but not overly-well lit so apologies for the flash bouncing around all over the place.  See more at: Jessica Ennis

Chris Mears, Olympic Diver, Google hero

Just been checking Google Analytics and it seems that a big part of the surge in traffic my website experienced over the Olympics was down to this picture:
Cheers Chris!  See the original and others from the 2012 UK Diving Championships held at Ponds Forge, Sheffield at: http://www.peverilphoto.com/photo_9701911.html

Jessica Ennis - Golden Girl

Jessica Ennis was amazing on 'Super Saturday' in particular to win the Gold Medal for the Women's Heptathalon at London 2012, in doing so she achieved a British and Commonwealth record score of 6,955 points, beating silver medallist Lilli Schwarzkopf by 306 points and bronze medallist Tatyana Chernova by a further 21 points.

Tomorrow she will be given a golden reception in Barker's Pool Sheffield to welcome her home.  Barker's Pool will be transformed into a golden arena for Jess and up to 15,000 fans who have been asked to wear something gold to commorate the occasion.
Check www.peverilphoto.com after the event for photos.

A personal take on the Olympics

Having been lucky enough to watch three Olympic sports, we (the family) enjoyed our once-in-a-lifetime experience.  The Athletics stadium is fabulous - personally I would rather watch sport there than in the insipid (new) Wembley.  It was also good to get into the Aquatics Centre and be part of a large crowd for a swimming event (ok, it was synchro swimming but more of that later).

Olympic football at Old Trafford was good as well (Egypt vs Japan) - 71,000 people cheering on a fairly good game.  Old Trafford did give us a taste of what to expect at the Olympic Park.  The crowds were just a crush and security was a real crowd-slower (as opposed to the Olympic Park where the Army was in charge and whizzed you through).

Lessons Learned for LOCOG.
1)  Ticketing - not impressed at all. Why have so many tranches of applications?  And why were so many people disappointed?  Just get them all out in advance and let people have at least one sport from their application if at all possible.  I know that you have to give x% to corporate and x% to dignitaries, but the sight of so many empty seats at venues (particularly basketball and diving) where we had tried time and again to get tickets was galling.  Just as bad were all the corporates who were there for the business not the sport - you could tell who they were by the fact that they were always up and down in the seats in front of you, coming back 10 minutes later with the next round of beers and not really bothered about the sport.  Please get them a hospitality tent where they can enjoy the sport on a big screen in the background and leave the seats to the real fans.....that meant many nights of chasing last-minute tickets: handball, no; volleyball, no; basketball, no; diving, no....all of which looked to have plenty of empty seats when we watched on telly, but synchronised swimming - yes!!
2)  Photography.  Come on.  We're not doing something that has not already been done before.....I was not assuaged by the lack of any real information beforehand about what kind of camera you can take.  Lots of people have DSLRs these days and to only see bits that said "...nothing bigger than 30cm...." was no real guide at all.  Andy Hooper wrote a nice little book called 'Capture The Moment' that seemed to be at odds with what LOCOG were telling or not really telling us.  In the end we had the sight of Tom Daley asking for a re-dive due to all the flashes on a myriad of compact cameras, and instructions from LOCOG for us not to publish any photos taken.  I'll have a look in a couple of weeks to see how many non-official pictures come up in a Google search.  We're not terrorists, we just want to take a picture of an inspiring moment and share it.  Will the athletes who took pictures at the Opening/Closing ceremony and have posted them on facebook be hounded?
3) Stadium design.  Fab, though it is unbeliveable that you cannot see the top of the 10m diving platform from the top half of the top tier of seats in the Aquatics Centre.  A little faux-pas in whoever checked the CAD on that one.
4)  Prices.  It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for most people so although we baulked at £95 per head for the athletics, it was worth it.  To then charge people £4.60 for a pint in a plastic glass or £8.50 for a dollop of Thai curry was making the world and his wife pay London prices.  On the plus side, being able to bring in a bit a our own food was very welcome.
5)  Sponsors.  Top marks to Coca-Cola for their red-and-white block.  A bit of entertainment in the queue, some stuff to play with on the way up, a free picture with the Olympic Torch at the top and a party in the basement.  In a close second was Samsung with it's digital postcards and pin badges.  Thereafter it was just unadulterated sales pitches for the captive masses, and the film by BMW was just mind-numbingly tedious.  7 years and a bootful of cash and the most exciting thing about your pavilion was the water cascading down the outside....?!?!?!  oh, and EDF - everyone was impressed with their photo with a 3D Victoria Pendleton but has anyone actually managed to download a copy....???
6) Games-makers and the park.  Absolutely wonderful.  A nice bunch of helpful people that have given a very positive impression of GB.  The wildlife park running through the middle of the park was also a touch of genius and a welcome sit-down and catch-up with the big-screen.
7)  Security.  G4S were conspicouous by their absence.  Well done to the UK Armed Forces.  They were efficient, friendly and got the job done.  Personally, they should have been in on it from day 1 and monies spent on private security instead have gone to veterans charities.  Overall the Games passed without an incident (that we know about) so congrats to all the efforts that made that happen and let everyone attending feel safe.
8)  Information.  Hmm, do I dare wear my Pepsi t-shirt and Nike trainers?  Can I take a camera to the football?  Could do better.  All of this should have been sorted months beforehand and been clearly publicised.
9)  Sustainability.  Very good!  Everything was well made (-1 for the Aquatics Centre...) and with a mind to the environment/what would happen to it afterwards.  Someone will have to address how they take off the top tier of the athletics arena if West Ham are going to take it over...=:~)
10)  Opening and Closing Ceremonies.  Once you got over the thought that Danny Boyle was just making a favourites tape then it was very entertaining.  Perhaps a little bit long on both occasions, but a great impression of GB which will stay with the world for a very long time.
Overall verdict: 9/10 and a seat on the IOC for Seb - well done London 2012!

It's like Tom Daley, only in reverse...

My old stats teacher (Mr Dobbs) would have a fit with me describing a graph like that (but then I did get an 'E' in A-level stats.....and the Olympics have had that effect on the old website:

a nice upward curve that went up and up and down and down and up etc, to settle back again at a lower level, but nice to have broken the 3000 visitors a month barrier.  It'll probably be a long time coming again.  Hmmm, now where did I put those pictures of Pele and Brazilian Carnival dancers for the next Olympics.....??

The best read in UK Tennis

UK Tennis Magazine is an independent tennis publication that provides information, entertainment and communication services for all tennis enthusiasts.
They will be using some pictures of my pictures of Jonathan Marray at his Civic Reception in Sheffield in their next edition.  Find them at: http://www.uktennis.org.uk/

The Olympic Effect

Thanks to the interest in the current London 2012 Games, there has been a large increase in the number of hits on photos featuring Olympic athletes.  The number of hits on www.peverilphoto.com has reached 1,067 over the past month =:~)
Wow, such a spike and a nice milestone to look back on.  This time next year, Rodney.......

Friday 20 July 2012

Here's hoping that GB Wimbledon Champions are like buses....

Had the honour of going to the Civic Reception for Jonathan Marray the other night.  He turned up to Sheffield Town Hall with his Men's Doubles trophy (last seen with a GB competitor 76 years ago...) and posed for a few photos with the guests and dignitaries.

All the best for the US Open!

Money, money, money......

Just an observation, but on a commercial job I am surprised at the length of time it takes for a company to process an invoice these days (usually after a reminder email or two and a phone call or two...).  I reckon on average it takes about 10-12 weeks for a commercial job to be paid for.
Perhaps that it the 'norm' in commerce these days - get the job done and worry about the money side next quarter.  I wonder if Warehouse Express would go with that if I wanted to buy a lens from them - Thanks.  The cheque will be "...in the post...."????

Why is it so hard to say Thank You?

Why is it so hard for us to say 'Thank You' to the people who help us?  Not just the quick “thanks” for the people who hold the door open for you, but the “going out of your way thank you” for the people who go above and beyond to help us or do something special.
If we have a problem with someone, we can be vocal, sometimes very vocal about it - especially making sure everyone around knows about it.  But too many people seem to just let it slide by if we get something nice.
Having a fairly decent camera in my hands at an event, therefore taking a fair number of good pictures, I am more than happy to pass them on to a diving club, athlete/coach/family, school etc. They get some good quality pictures as a 'Thank You' from me for their efforts at the event.  While it is always nice to get an email or phone call to say 'Thank You' from the recipient, I am puzzled by the level of people who don't bother to provide any response.  Were the pictures pants?  Were they not what they thought?  Could they just not be bothered?
Anyway, moral of the story - don't bother worrying about the people who don't know how to say 'Thank You', just make sure that when you get something good, whether it be a service or something tangible, try to say 'Thank You' - it does mean a lot to the giver.

Rolling, rolling, rolling.....

And while I'm at it, hey, why not get in with Google+ now it's all settled down and looking like it might be a useful tool to get some decent local SEO.......

flickr

Well, it's been a long time coming, but I've finally gotten round to putting some pictures on flickr.  This has mainly been prompted by the fact that clickpic now supports a flickr stream without impinging on your photo limit.

As a start I've chosen to put some athletes into an 'Olympians' gallery in the run up to the start of the 2012 London Olympic Games.

Monday 9 July 2012

This time next year Rodney, we'll be millionaires....

In order to generate a bit more cashflow (well, this is the 1980s, right?) and start saving towards the Nikon 400m f/2.8 lens that is the de-facto standard for sports photography (especially now that Jacobs have closed their Sheffield branch, again, so lens rental is less of an option), I have added some more photos in various galleries to be purchased.  Photos are usually £15 for a high-quality JPG (for non-commercial use).

British Gas ASA National Championships (50M) 2012

I have been having a few more days sweating it out at Ponds Forge in Sheffield - it is just so hot in there - ok for the swimmers/divers but I have seen so many spectators go out to the shop and buy a hand-held float to use as a fan.

Anyway, another great event (well done to the ASA and British Gas) with some excellent performances as this is the last chance to snap up a spot in the GB Swimming Team for the London 2012 Olympics.
Some pictures from the event can be found here.

Seb Coe is THE man!

It's not often that a 'Sebastian' grabs the headlines, but good old Seb Coe has done a sterling job, firstly heading up the UK's bid to get the Olympics and then running the show.  On Monday it was his turn to be a bit of a figurehead and enjoy the limelight in a town where he did so much of his running in the late 70s and early 80s.  He carried the Olympic Torch along Arundel Gate in Sheffield - seen here waiting to 'kiss' the flame into life:

The world and his wife and their dog all want pictures at the moment so when I get a chance to put some on my own website I'll post an update.
Good couple of days though.  Well done to LOCOG for their organisation and especially to Sheffield City Council for putting so much effort into hosting a mega evening celebration and stopover/sendoff.

Heavy Duty Stuff

Had a very nice hour in Ecclesfield on Saturday taking stock photos of a large hydraulic shackle and control system for the nice people at LDD.  It was lifted into position by an overhead crane and we attached the pipes and control box and sat them on the white vinyl to show how it all fits together.
The shackle is for use underwater and is part of a consignment heading off to the Middle East.  I offered to do some in-situ pictures once it is all operational.....

British Gas 2012 Diving Championships

Last weekend saw the top diviers in the UK competing at Ponds Forge in Sheffield for the British Gas 2012 Diving Championships. Photos from the event can be seen here.  Deserved winners of the men's 10m synchro competition were Tom Daley and Pete Waterfield:

More details of the competition can be found at: British Das 2012 Diving Championships

Ready for a holiday

Just finished a lovely wedding at Tankersley Manor and hope to complete processing the pictures in a couple of days, which will leave a bit of time for a breather before the start of the Olympic Diving Trials at Ponds Forge.

I had my eye on a Nikon R1 micro flash unit but saved my money in the end and instead bought a used SB-20 flash unit.  It must be all of 25 years old but still pops like a good one.  Even more impressive is the fact that you can pick up a Yongnuo battery pack for it on ebay for less than £20!  You can never have too many flashguns - this one will do quite nicely on manual mode all the time with a trigger to trip it.

Bet Fred 2012 World Snooker Championships

Lauren Higgins the daughter of the late, great and much missed Alex Higgins, was at the Crucible in Sheffield for the first semi-final of the Bet Fred 2012 World Snooker Championships.  The last time that she was there in the public eye was in 1982 when Alex, overcome with emotion after winning his second world title, hoisted her and the trophy aloft as tears ran down his face.

Also there was Shaun Murphy, World Champion in 2005, supporting his friend Ali Carter from the stands.  It was nice to see Stephen Hendry enjoying himself in the commentary box, the smiles and the banter must be great for him.

Monday 30 April 2012

As Chas and Dave would sing......

Been busy at the World Snooker Championships when work/family give me time to head off to the Crucible.
BetFred always look after the media in our little room (normally the rehearsal room backstage) so a day there is never a drag.  There are some pix on my website already and there will be some more later in the weeek and then again next week after the final on Monday 7th May.

Thursday 19 April 2012

It's rainy April

Had a good bit of time off over Easter.  One of the nice surprises was a request from Cheese Chisholm of the Harlem Globetrotters for some of the pictures from the game they played at the Sheffield Arena in March.

"Message: Hey Andy its cheese from the Harlem globetrotters #11... I was wondering if you could hook me up with the pictures that you took of me..so i can add them to my photo gallery."
You can just upload them on my fan page here is the link:http://www.facebook.com/CheeseChisholm11

Carpe Diem

Barney Owl (mascot of Sheffield Wednesday) made an appearance at the Sport Relief Mile in Hillsborough Park last Sunday.  I saw him hovering but I was pre-occupied with looking for pictures of runners approaching the finish line....I thought, I'll get him in a moment....well, I didn't of course and now I've been asked for a photo of him at Sport Relief so that SWFC could put it into their programme for this week......arrrrggghhhh....never mind, this time next year Rodney.....

Tuesday 27 March 2012

My first Basketball game shoot

If you're going to shoot a basketball game, your first in fact, then why not make it a biggie?  The Harlem Globetrotters came to the Sheffield Motorpoint Arena on Friday 23rd March and I was able to get press accreditaton for it as a freelancer.  Good job no-one was paying me for the pictures as I was not at my best......(or as Scott Kelby said of his first basketball shoot - "...I sucked...").

The lighting was ok for watching the game as a spectator, but even the EIS (notorious among sports photographers) lets you use 1/1000th at 4000ISO (not ideal, but ok).  For the Globetrotters I was at 1/640th at 6400ISO and hoping that the noise wasn't going to be too bad.  Needless to say the D700 did a fab job and it was just down to me, trying to get the angles while not blocking anyone's view and failing hopelessly to really follow the action as those guys whip it round the court so fast in one of their trade-mark "now-you-see-it-now-you-don't" moves.
Great night, great show.  Check out their website.

Monday 26 March 2012

Sport Relief Mile, Sheffield 2012

It was a gloriously sunny day and the runners turned out in their droves at Hillsboroug Park to join in this year's Sport Relief Mile, raising money and having fun.  Winners of the main 6mile run were Rebecca Robinson and Philip Cowley.  Well done all.

Tuesday 20 March 2012

What's new pussycat?

Update.....well, the 'bouncing' Nikon SB-900 has been given a check-over by the nice people at 'H.Lehmann' and should be back with me soon.  Endcliffe Park Cafe have confirmed my space on their gallery wall for as soon as I want it, so I've gone with a souped-up picture of Surprise View, Peak District, ordered as a canvas from Supersize Print and complemented with the same as postcards from VistaPrint.  Good job I haven't got kids wanting to drain my pocket of spare cash as well........

Monday 19 March 2012

What to do for Mother's Day.....

.....well Mrs C drove us up to Barnard Castle to see her family.  We went into NEST for a drink and I had a lovely chat with Eva Zandman about her photography and how to get the best out of Google Analytics.

All the best Eva - hope you have some great work this year =:~)

Friday 16 March 2012

And the Winner is.....

....Lowepro.  I have had several of their bags over the years and my 4year-old Slingshot 300AW recently bust a zip.  After a quick email to their website and sending my bag off to the UK Distrbutors, a replacement Slingshot 302AW arrived a couiple of days later.  Great products and even better customer service - well done!

The Moon's A Balloon (or 'Put a Diffusion Dome on your flash...')

As David Niven noted in his marvellous book "The Moon's A Balloon", there is an old proverb that says when the soft breezes blow and the sun is warmest on your back, the breezes are planting the seeds of weeds into your garden.
I thought I was having a pretty good time of it recently - photo sales up, being published in several places, page views up.....but then the weeds started to blow in: I've left my umbrella box somewhere (who knows where..??), the zip bust on my camera bag, my home-made flash grid gave up the ghost (good excuse to sit down with the black straws and glue again), and then I discovered that it helps to have the diffusion dome on your flash if it decides to bungee jump from your light stand.  The diffusion dome broke but it did at least break the fall of the SB-900 which mostly still works but has had to be shipped off for repair (I'd normally leave it but it is the only flash that fits my ring-flash so needs to be working, particularly as it is now discontinued).  So, that money which should be dribbling in from invoices and which was pencilled in for nice things has now been spent, and more, on weeding.....oh, the joy of photography =:~)

Monday 12 March 2012

The Joy of Analytics

One of the things that we couldn't imagine 20 years or so ago was the world-wide-web and just how much it would become an integral part of so many areas of our lives.
The best tool imaginable for anyone with a website who wants to see who is looking at it, where they are, what pages they land on, where they exit, keywords etc etc etc etc etc (there is just too much to list here), is Google Analytics.  As I've said before on this blog, it's helped me see that Michaela Tabb is the most looked-for person that ranks on my website (still don't quite get that).  Today I'm celebrating a milestone.  Just after Christmas Google Analytics was telling me that I had had over 400 visitors to my site in the last 30 days (a standard, rolling view) and that has been creeping up since pictures were published from the UK Indoor Athlectics in mid-February, and has now reached 501 visitors for the period 10 Feb-11 Mar 2012.  I don't think Scott Kelby will be losing any sleep over this, but if he happens to be reading this then all I can say is: "Scott, hi - I'm up to be your Wednesday Guest Blogger, anytime, no really!" =:~)
So, Google Analytics, thank you for a pep on a Monday morning.

When things don't work out with Google

There is an old saying that goes "When one door closes another door opens".  Yesterday I was contacted by Google about working for them on a project called 'Google Business Photos'.  They had seen my website and the commercial work that I have in Sheffield, but.....it needed more of a time commitment than I can give for now so we parted on our separate ways.....
Today I've sold another photo from the Aviva UK Indoor Athletics Championships and hope that it will be the start of a collaboration with a major Sheffield institution.....it's all swings and roundabouts.

Monday 5 March 2012

Framed

One of the best places to chill out in Sheffield, Endcliffe Park Cafe is a family friendly cafe in a great spot in S11, with a warm welcome at any time of year.  Always busy when the sun is out, they organise events throughout the year (look out for the Duck Run down the Porter Brook - this year on Mon 9th April).
I have just pencilled in to place one of my canvases on their 'gallery' wall after Easter.  Now I have to think what would look best there - probably a nice local scene that will fit in with the windows to make it seem like you are looking out of a window.

Thursday 1 March 2012

Where do all the good newspaper pun headlines come from?

I've been trying to think of one for this blog since the Aldershot Mail got in touch to request the use of a couple of photos of Isobel Pooley from the Aviva Indoor Athletics UK Championships 2012.
Isobel is a talented young high jumper from Hampshire and the photos are to accompany a piece on her and the 2012 Olympics.  Go Isobel!

Put to The Sword

The Sword is British Fencing's magazine  which includes articles, reports and news from across the sport.  They have asked to use two photos of mine from the UK Fencing Championships 2011 for their next issue.

Wednesday 22 February 2012

Why is Michaela Tabb so popular?

Just doing a few updates on the website with new photos, sections etc and thinking about the next BIG sporting event - the World Snooker Championships.
Over the past year Google Analytics has often shown one of my pictures of Michaela Tabb to be quite popular.  Many of the hits were at one time coming from Poland.
I'm still confused by it all but similar to many companies now I'm having a 'Spring Clearance' - the price for a digital JPG from the 2011 World Snooker Championships has been reduced from £15 to £5, valid until 31st March 2012.

Monday 20 February 2012

What a busy week....

Half-Term last week - traditionally a time to chill, get a few jobs done and watch trashy films in the evening when the kids have gone to bed.Was very busy last week taking pix, choosing the best, processing them, sending them off to all and sundry and posting a few online, so the list of jobs stayed as long as before....
It all started off with a press conference at the EIS (Press Conference) for Jessica Ennis prior to the Aviva UK Indoor Athletics Trials and Championships.  Then two full days of the Aviva UK Indoor Athletics Trials and Championships (Athletics) being looked after by UKA and Aviva (thank you!).
This was followed by a training session with the US Olympic Diving Squad (Diving) at Ponds Forge in advance of the FINA World Cup in London.
All of this was on my doorstep so very hard to turn down the chance to do this with top sportspeople, unlike the chance to go to a press conference with Mo Farah in Birmingham which got chopped due to child-juggling (literally).

Monday 13 February 2012

New Nikon Gear

Just recovering from a busy weekend at the UK Indoor Athletics Championships at the EIS in Sheffield.  Back to work and family duties - no idea when the editing will get done...

All the talk of the pro togs from London was that they were going to get a D4 when they come out - no-one seemed to want to know about the D800, wrong spec for sports I guess but most folks thought that they have missed a trick in not doing a D700 replacement, perhaps Nikon are holding on to that one for a while. Hope so, as I've not got any money to splash on anything for a while.

Monday 6 February 2012

Rip off Britain

Well, I did think that this blog was going to be mainly photography related but I have been so flabbergasted this weekend that I thought it right to vent a bit of spleen on it.
We were very lucky and managed to get some tickets to see the athletics at the Olympics in August and booked our accommodation in London back in June 2011 when we knew that we had some tickets.  The room price was going to be £125 per night B&B (not cheap but not too bad looking at other prices for similar in London).  No deposit, monies to be paid 1 month prior.  Everything looking good, or so we thought until the hotel called us to say that they are bumping up the price to £200 per night "...as it is the Olympics....".
Well, blow me but that is just too much for words, but probably just enough to refer them to the Office of Fair Trading....?

New (old) back-up camera

Much as I would love to splurge £8k on a new D3S/D4 and 300mm f/2.8 lens, my head won over my heart and I picked up a 5yr old D200 and battry grip with less than 7k accuations.  It's not going to be stellar for indoor sports but will be handy as a back-up body for weddings and studio shoots and may even get pressed into service for arty sport shots (grainy images or stuck on a tripod and let the action flow past).

Canvas Prints

Had a lot of interest for canvas prints recently, based on an offer from 1ClickPrint.  Prints up to A2 size look fab for hanging in the home or office and do not need too much tweaking straight out of the camera.

I am putting an order together this week and will add some more in after half-term when there will be pix not only from the up-coming UK Indoor Athletics Championships at EIS but also a media Q&A with the US Olympic Diving team at Ponds Forge.

Less than two weeks to go

It's nearly February and that is exciting as in less than two weeks, Aviva will be bringing the UK Indoor Athletics Championships back to the EIS in Sheffield. Last year was a fab time (see: 2011 UK Indoor Athletics) and this year promises to be even better as our athletes concentrate on getting selected for the GB Olympic team.

The 300mm f2.8 lens is booked out from Jacobs and will be getting heavy use over the weekend of 11/12 Feb. I'm also going to be trying some remote work with the camera down on the floor near the hurdles with a wide-angle lens and triggered by some Yongnuo 602s.

Before then though I've got a birthday party to shoot next weekend and as it will be indoors, will be trying some green-screen effects to see how creative the 11 year olds can get.

Well, miracles do happen...

I cannot really say anything but how surprised I am that yesterday's criminal activity was resolved so quickly - the nicked image has now been removed by the company that posted it (who themselves have such a lengthy EULA/T&C that you'd think they had a mind to look out for these things themselves).

Really, it would have been nice for them to buy the use of the image which resides at: http://www.peverilphoto.com/photo_6806301.html, but it's only money....

Nasty shock for 2012....

I suppose it had to happen at some time in my 'life' as being a photographer, but I've just seen the first example of my work being used without permission or copyright, and for commercial purposes too!  It was a shock to browse the web and see a restaurant advertising a special offer and using a photo of mine with it.

As the restaurant was a large chain, I had previously contacted them to see if they wanted to use the photo. They did not take up on the offer (their website has a 'generic' photo that they use in a lot of cases). So I contacted them again and asked them about this offer.

They replied that they did not know anything about it. It looks like it has been posted by a third party marketing outfit ripping off my image and then placing the advert in an online 'gazette'. I have contacted both the marketing company and the 'gazette' asking for the article to be removed. We will wait and see.....
